Nifty 50 vs Gift Nifty: Key Differences Every Market Participant Should Know

Gift Nifty

The Indian financial landscape features several benchmarks and derivative instruments that allow participants to observe domestic economic performance. Among these, the nifty 50 serves as the primary domestic equity barometer, while gift nifty provides an offshore derivative window into the same underlying basket of companies.

Both instruments are based on the performance of the fifty largest, publicly listed Indian companies, but they are used for different purposes, regulated by different rules and regulations, and have different timelines. Knowing these differences gives a factual basis to analyse the role of each instrument in the financial system. 1.

Underlying Concept and Instrument Structure

First of all, it is important to differentiate a spot cash index from a futures derivative in order to assess the differences between the two.

Domestic Benchmark: NSE Indices has built and managed an equity index called the domestic 50-stock index. It monitors 50 large cap, liquid stocks on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). It is determined in real time according to the free-float market capitalization method, and is the real underlying equity market.
Offshore Derivative: GIFT Nifty is an index futures contract that trades on the NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) based in GIFT City, Gujarat. It is not an equity index per se, but rather a derivative contract, the value of which is based on the domestic cash index. Investing in this product will involve in making contracts to settle the value difference of the index at a later time.
The rights of regulatory and operational jurisdiction.

While both platforms are rooted in Indian financial infrastructure, they fall under different administrative zones:

  • The domestic segment of the NSE, where trading of cash and derivative products is done, is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Normal domestic banking, domestic income tax and securities transaction laws are in full force.
International Financial Services Centre (IFSC): GIFT Nifty trades in a foreign jurisdiction known as an IFSC, set up in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) is responsible for operations here. This single regulator regulates cross-border transactions and provides an international standard that will enable it to meet global financial centres.
The act of naming and settling currency.Denominating and settling money.

Currency denomination is one of the most practical operational differences between the two markets:

  • Indian Rupee (INR): All transactions in the domestic market are conducted in Indian Rupees, along with the valuation of all portfolio items, dividend yields and settlement.
GIFT Nifty Contracts are denominated and settled in US Dollar to enable participation of foreign institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds and non-resident entities. This means that global institutions can trade in Indian equities without having to convert their money into local currency for day to day requirements for contracts and margin.
Trading a shift and aligning with the world.

Each instrument has its hours to reflect its target group and place in the global markets:

Domestic Exchange Hours: The domestic equity segment will be trading from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST) with a pre-market hour of 15 minutes. The main focus of this window is on domestic operating times.
Extended Offshore Sessions: GIFT Nifty is traded over almost 21 hours per every business day in 2 consecutive sessions.
Session 1: 6:30 AM to 3:40 PM IST
Session 2: 4:35 PM to 2:45 AM IST

The offshore contract trades even as European and US markets are open, so picking up on global macroeconomic changes, changes in commodity prices and changes in interest rates overseas before the domestic market opens.

The eligibility and access to the program.Eligibility and access for participants.

Access rules differ fundamentally between the domestic cash market and the offshore derivative segment:

  • Domestic Access: Indian retail investors, domestic institutional investors (DIIs), high-net-worth individuals, and registered Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) can participate directly in domestic cash and derivative segments.
  • Offshore Eligibility: The NSE IX platform is primarily structured for international market participants, institutional entities, qualified foreign investors, and eligible Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Retail domestic resident individuals face restrictions under foreign exchange management guidelines regarding trading offshore leveraged derivatives.
  1. The relationship between the price of the product and the basis.

GIFT Nifty is a futures contract and the price of the futures contract is not necessarily the same as the level of the domestic cash index. The difference between the futures price and the spot index is known as the basis.

Factors influencing this price relationship include:

  • Cost of Carry: Interest rates on the money borrowed for the position until expiration.
Close to the monthly settlement date: Contracts that are closer to the time of settlement tend to be more alike the cash price.
Offshore Sentiment: Offshoring sentiment in hours where the domestic market is closed can create a significant premium or discount in the futures contract against its previous domestic settling price.
