2026 US Open Predictions: Top Contenders, Dark Horses and Must-Watch Storylines

Contenders

The 2026 US Open is only seven months away and will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows on the hard courts that favor the complete player. A strong serve will be required but it is not enough to win a tournament of this caliber. The return of serve and ability to defend from the back of the court will be key to winning matches in New York. Fans can also expect late-night matches that will take a physical toll on the players and test their mental strength as the tournament wears on.

The US Open will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows on hard courts. These surfaces favor players of complete games. Therefore, having a good serve will not be enough to win matches. The player must have the ability to return, to defend himself/between the baseline and to remain focused when late matches go to extra sets.

As has been the case thus far in the season, the recent results will serve as a good starting point to predict the upcoming 2026 US Open, yet they will by no means provide a definitive answer to the question of who will emerge victorious in the Men’s and Women’s Singles events.

Seven months into the tennis season, the world’s best will soon travel to New York for the final Grand Slam of the year. Jannik Sinner is listed as the favorite to win the Men’s singles title after having recently won Wimbledon in July to lift his first Grand Slam and also his first Major on outdoor hard courts. On the Women’s side, new star Linda Noskova will make her first ever US Open appearance after having lifted her first Major in Wimbledon’s Women’s final as well on outdoor hard courts.

The 2026 US Open is just around the corner. We at tennis-portal.com take a closer look at the upcoming tournament. We present you the leading contenders for the men’s and women’s title, surprise contenders and the most important storylines prior to the event in New York.

Jannik Sinner Enters as the Men’s Favorite

Sinner should be considered the favorite in the men’s tournament.

Sinner is one of the few players on the circuit with a game well suited to the hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He is a very aggressive player who takes the ball early and is always moving in between shots. He has a lot of flexibility and is able to make a lot of quick changes of direction, allowing him to cover a lot of ground on the baseline. When Sinner is serving well he can be very tough to face as his serve and return games are equally as strong, allowing him to hit his aggressive shots from all over the court.

After the Wimbledon win, Sinner will go straight into the North American hard-court season, where he will face a surface that suits his game, and a series of matches that will test his skills against some of the very best tennis players in the world. The Italian has reportedly won 21 of his last 22 matches against top-10 players, including his recent Wimbledon final against Fabio Fognini, and fans can expect the Italian to continue his impressive form at the US Open.

Sinner has the strongest possibility of reaching the second week of the tournament. Even then, he is not guaranteed to win since the hard courts of New York are notorious for producing upsets in the later rounds of Grand Slams.

The conditions in New York are far different from Wimbledon and the hard courts of the North American summer. The air can be thick with humidity. The noise from the crowds is deafening. And the matches are played late into the night.

Of course, defending favorite Sinner will have his work cut out. Hard courts, in general, require more from players than grass and with the crowds, the late finishes, the change in weather etc., all of the elements of the US Open can sometimes get the better of a player.

Prediction: Sinner reaches at least the semifinals and has the best overall chance of winning the men’s title.

Carlos Alcaraz Remains the Most Dangerous Challenger

There is one name that must be mentioned when talking about potential title winners at the 2026 US Open, that of Carlos Alcaraz.

First of all, there is no doubt that at his best, Carlos Alcaraz is a nightmare to face, due to his well-rounded set of skills that allow him to tackle any situation with success. The Spanish young star can get back behind the baseline and defend deep, attack from inside the court, or even hit a drop shot to force his opponent to move forward. He is one of the fastest players on tour, which also allows him to get to a lot of shots that others wouldn’t be able to get to.

The main thing to keep in mind when discussing Alcaraz is his preparation for the tournament.

Alcaraz, the winner of the 2026 Australian Open and the completion of the career Grand Slam for the young Spaniard, has not been 100% since the spring due to a right-wrist injury. Thus his preparation for the US Open hard-court season will be more important than his ranking. Serve speed, especially, as well as his powerful forehand and whether he is willing to come forward early in a point to take time from his opponent, will be telling in the summer leading up to New York. A long early-round match could expose a not fully healthy Alcaraz.

Fully fit, Carlos Alcaraz would be on par with Sinner at the top of the men’s entry list and would be the Spaniard’s greatest opponent in the semi-final. But until we see Alcaraz fully fit on a hard court and playing with full timing and movement, we will have no idea as to whether he is up to full speed. That is to say, a long early-round match against a tenacious opponent could very well bring out in Alcaraz the version of himself we saw for much of the second half of last season, that being a less than 100% Alcaraz.

We will have to keep an eye on Alcaraz before the US Open in order to determine the extent to which he has fully recovered from his right-wrist injury that impacted his play in the spring. If he is serving at the same speed, has the same level of forehand as he did in the Australian Open, and is willing to take as many chances as before then he will be one of the best players in the world once again. His form in the lead-up hard-court events will be a good indicator of how he will perform in New York.

Prediction: Healthy Alcaraz can match Sinner step for step through the tournament and will be the young Italian’s greatest opponent throughout the summer.

Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic Cannot Be Ignored

Alexander Zverev continues to possess the type of game that can carry a player deep into the US Open. His serve at times can produce short points, and his backhand is one of the more consistent shots that he uses in his game. He reached the 2026 Wimbledon final where he was defeated by Sinner, and he should have enough in his game to get through the early rounds.

Alexander Zverev continues to play at a high level of tennis and has the type of game that can allow him to get deep into a major tournament. His serve at times can produce very short points, and his backhand is considered to be one of the better shots in men’s tennis. He played a strong 2026 season in which he reached the final of Wimbledon losing to Sinner in five sets. He has the talent and the experience to get through a very tough US Open draw.

Zverev has in the past been found wanting in the big points as he has been too passive. He has the talent to beat the best but he is rarely for finding ways to come from behind in long matches against the top players as he would need to rely on the opponent making mistakes.

Novak Djokovic has long been one of the greatest competitors in tennis, but his age will play a big role in determining whether he can get through long five-set matches. Even so, the Serb is at his best when it comes to matters of strategy, and his vast experience will be critical in deciding the outcome of the closer matches.

Djokovic may no longer be the automatic favorite at every major. Yet placing him outside the group of genuine contenders would be premature.

Prediction: Zverev or Djokovic will make the quarterfinals of the US Open with right draws for the final eight.

Aryna Sabalenka Leads a Deep Women’s Field

The women’s section also should not be under-estimated for difficulties in forecasting the tournaments results.

The key to Aryna Sabalenka’s success on hard courts is her ability to be extremely powerful on them. On a hard court, Aryna Sabalenka can dominate with her serve, take the ball early with her first forehand, and hit her first forehand down the line to take her opponents on a long run to hit it. If she can keep her aggression in check and not turn into impatience, she can take down any opponent in the draw.

Sabalenka at her best is an extremely aggressive player but she also is at her best when she is very patient. Most of the time she is not, and so she tends to hit a lot of double faults. As I mentioned before, her aggression can become impatience and that has been a major issue for her in big matches.

One also needs to take into consideration the pre-season analysis for the US Open from several quality sports handicapping sources, including Doc’s Sports Service. Their pre-season analysis for the US Open will provide excellent insight on the odds to win and on the US Open tennis matchup analysis for all players who will be participating in the US Open tennis draws. As with all of our handicapping previews on the US Open, our pre-season analysis should not be used as the sole basis for making any wagers for the US Open tennis draws, but rather in conjunction with each player’s current form, level of fitness, the type of court that will be used for the match at hand, as well as the completed tennis draw for the US Open.

Elena Rybakina is another woman who is receiving similar attention. Her powerful serve and her use of flatter ground strokes on hard courts should prove to be effective at the US Open. In fact, Rybakina is the defending champion of the Australian Open where she defeated Sabalenka in the final. Her ability to perform under extreme pressure on a tennis court should translate to hard courts at the US Open.

Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina are the two strongest pre-draw choices to win the women’s championship.

The Draw Will Change Every Prediction

Predictions made before the draw must remain flexible.

There are only a few weeks until the US Open and the final draw for the tournament will be made shortly. The initial predictions made for the tournament will be altered by the draws of the players in each section of the competition. For example, a top player could receive an early draw against a player who they could easily defeat in order to progress to the next round. On the other hand, another top player could receive a difficult early draw against a previous Grand Slam finalist, followed by a third round match against a big server, before facing a top 8 opponent in the quarterfinals.

One of the last components to pay attention to before making your predictions would be the players’ fitness. The last hard-court tournament before New York is taking place in Canada. A week later, the final hard-court tournament of the summer will be held in Cincinnati. It will be very interesting to see how the top players manage to recover after long and grueling matches. Will they be able to carry the fatigue over to the final Grand Slam of the year in New York?

This, of course, is to be expected of a tournament as grueling as the US Open, where weather conditions are unpredictable, a packed stadium exerts great pressure on the players and a long, grueling five-set match can drain a player of much-needed energy for the subsequent match. In other words, one erroneous service game could drastically alter an player’s section of the draw and potentially end their chances at the title.

Final US Open Predictions

Sinner is the pick for the men’s title, given his recent success on hard courts, and, more importantly, his consistent form against the world’s best players. Alcaraz is the next best option, but the Spanish player must be 100% fit to be considered.

For the women, Sabalenka’s power of shot would make her a slight favorite in a draw full of talented competitors. But Rybakina’s solid game could be a more controlled way to make a run at the title. Gauff would also be a close third, given her brilliant defensive skills and vast experience playing in front of huge crowds in New York.
